Two Langmuir Wave Parametric Decay Instability Driven and Trapped by a Self-Trapped Electromagnetic Pump

The conditions under which aua incident, x-z pol;trized strong pump electro-magnetic wave propagating in the ,'-direction is sell'-trapped as an equilibriumfilament in an initially uniform plasma are found for a Gaussian pump profile asexp[ -(x -x=)"/2d)j. Coupled equationsdescribingth?:parametriccouplingoftwoelectron Langmuir waves due to the spatially aperiodic inhomogeneity of theself-trapped pump filament amplitude are then derivccd. Moreover, 011 analysis ofthe eigenvalue problem arising from these equations demonstrates a possibilitythat decay Langmuir waves can be trapped as temporally growing waves ita adensity cavity created by the inhomogeneous pump when the punap amplitudeexceeds the threshold rather less than that for the deca y iuastability of J ackson-type.
