Effect of the Hydrostatic Pressure on the Ferroelastic NdP_5O_<14>

The effects of the hydrostatic pressure 011 the ferroelastic NdP,0.. xvereinvestigated both by crystal-optic methods and the single crystal X-ray diffracttontechnique, using three types of diamond anvil cells. The monoclinic to orthorhom-bic phase transition temperature T. was found to increase with increasing pressurewith the initial slope of dT./dP?38 K/kb. A marked increase of monoclintcdistortion angle c5 and the associated increase c>f the half angle of the extinctionpositions between the two neighboring ferroelastic domains 0 were observedwith the increase of applied hydrostatic pressure. Pressure effects on the abovemeasured quantities are discussed.
