Polariton Dispersion and Infrared Active Soft Modes in Ferroelectric Sr_2Nb_2O_7

Near-forward Raman scatterinn measurements on SrzNbz0v have been madefor studying dispersion relation of phonon poiaritons. In the low frequencyregion, the polariton effect has been observed for the amplitude mode locatedat 44 cm ' and the mode located at 54 cm-' at b(cc)b -I-la scattering geometry.The mode at 54 cm-' shows remarkable softening and the line-broadeningtoward a ferroelectric phase transition at l342'C when temperature is increasedfrom room temperature.
