Brillouin Scattering Studies of Liquid-Glass Transition in Normal-and Iso-Propanols

The liquid-glass transition in the isomer of n- and iso-propanols has been investigated in detail from temperature and pressure dependences of Brillouin scattering spectra. The temperature dependence of spectra was measured with 90°scattering and their pressure-dependence was observed in the backward geometry using the microscopic Brillouin scattering equipped with the diamond anvil cell. The fitting analyses were performed using the spectral function based on the viscoelastic theory and the Vinet equation. Large differences as for velocity and density at glass transition (T_g and P_g), existed between the isobaric-cooling and isothermal-pressure processes in iso-propanol, the same as in n-propanol: V(P_g >> V (T_g) and ρ(P_g) >> ρ(T_g). It was found that there is a little, but fine difference between two isomers due to a slight difference in molecular structures.
