Brillouin Scattering and Domain Observation of TlNO3 Crystals

The structural phase transition in TlNO3 crystals has been investigated by Brillouin scattering. Brillouin shift frequencies were almost unchanged at 79°C ($=T_{2}$), but they jumped at 144°C ($=T_{1}$), and the intensities varied at $T_{2}$. The transverse modes were not softened. Domain observations were performed in order to be certain that the orthorhombic phase at room temperature was "ferroelastic". It was found that the domains were only created under stress on the crystal. From this result, this crystal was judged to be not ferroelastic, but ferrobielastic according to Aizu's terminology.
