Raman Study of the Effects of Hydrogen Gas Annealing on PbTiO3 Crystals

To understand the hydrogen-induced degradation mechanism of the ferroelectric materials, this study investigated the effects of the annealing of the 4% H2/balance N2 forming gas on Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films and PbTiO3 crystals under several different gas conditions. This study measured the Raman spectra of the annealed PbTiO3 single crystal, and the $P$–$E$ hysteresis loop of the forming gas annealed PZT thin films. The force constants obtained from fitting Raman spectra of hydrogen-annealed and non-annealed PbTiO3 crystals to a simple harmonic oscillator model were compared. It turns out that the lattice vibration of the E($x$) phonon mode is sensitive to the hydrogen degradation. To confirm a decrease in the force constant of the E($x$)(TO) and E($x$)(LO), the phonon modes were calculated by the G- and F-matrices. Three undefined peaks related to the E($x$)(1TO), E($x$)(3TO), and E($x$)(3LO) normal modes were measured in the Raman spectrum of the annealed PbTiO3 crystal.
