Observation of the Intermedeate State in Superconducting Lead Films by Shadow Electron Microscopy

• By employing an electron microscope with a Tic(uid heliurrt cooled stage, periodicshadow patterns which are formed by an array of normal and superconductingdomains have been observed for lead films of thickness from 0.32 jtrn to 82 zm.These patterns have not beert confirmed for films thinner tltan 0.19 pm. By usinga generalized Landau laminar model, the surface energy parameter J(7'=0 K) inestimated from the observed period. Thickness dependence of the 140) can hardlybe found within the range from 0.32 qm to 82 pm', the avarage J(0)=380 A-J.30%.On the basis of the experimental results, the transition of the magnetic behaviorbetween the type-I and they type-II is discussed.
