Mass Spectrometric Study of Photofragment Free Radicals in the Photolyses of a Few Molecules

Mass spectrometric determination has been carried out on the primary processes in the photolyses of a few simple molecules containing C3H7-groups. The mass spectrum of the illuminated molecular flow was measured, and photofragment free radicals were identified by the mass spectrum remaining after the contribution from the unreacted reactant was subtracted. In most cases, the photofragments X and Y formed by the rupture of X-Y bond were observed without any configurational change. In the photolysis of n-propyl iodide, the photofragment C3H7 was found to be isopropyl radical suggesting the configurational change preceding the ionization of photofragments.
