Lifshitz's Criterion for Symmetry Changes in Second-Order Phase Transitions

Son?e points implicit in the Lztndatu theory of second-order phase transitions areclarified. Lifshitz's criterion is then directly derived by reqttiring the absence ofA-linear ternts ir? A.( p, 7'), the second-order coefficient in L?ttadau's expansion offree energy. It is shown that the presence of Ic-iincav ternts leads to invariantsbilinear in the order parameter and its spatial dot"ivative as jvroposed by Lifshitz.The theory is developed in parallel with the shallow impurity problems in semi-conductors and the k'p pet-turbation theory. Lil'shitz's criterion is shown to beequivalent to the absence of /c-linear terms in energy ba?tds. The equivalencemakes the application of Lifslvitz's criterion easier
