Anisotropic exchange dipole transitions is propose as a mechanism for the R lines of Cr_2O_3. Interpretation of the observed strange temperature dependence of the intensity of these zero lines is attempted on the basis of this mechanism. Calculations are carried out in the molecular field approximation, pair approximation and spin wave approximation. It is found that qualitative agreement with experiments may be obtained by assuming appropriate values for parameters. The observed difference in the temperature dependence of the lines σ1, σ2, π2 is also not inconsistent with the assumption of this mechanism. The observed rapid increase of intensity at very low temperatures remains to be a puzzle even with the present mechanism.
