The ground configuration of Gd" spins with a Cr" spin at an Al" site isinvestigated theoretically by treating spins as classical axial vectors. It is foundthat the eight nearest-neighbour Gd" spins around the Cr" spin align ferro-magnetically or antiferromagnetically, according as the maximum of the molecularfield on each Gd" site which is caused by the Cr"-Gd" exchange interactionis larger or smaller than that caused by the six Gd"-Gd" ones. The result isinteresting in connection with the spectrum of Cr" in GdAl0. below T.: 3.9 K.
