Motivated by Tokunaga's proposal that ratio of the paraelectric dipole moment p.to the saturation dipole moment p. is correlated with whether a ferroelectricsubstance belongs to the displacive or order-disorder type, we calculated the twodipole moments for the classical coupled anharmonic-oscillator model in the indepen-dent-site approximation. It is found that #./ jt. g l imt the displacive type and 7t./ p. : lin the order-disorder type. Thus, the ratio indeed has some correlation with the typesof ferroelectric phase transitions, but its magnitude alone is insufficient indiscriminating the two types. In addition, our theory predicts a certain relation be-tween jt./ p. and the discontinuity of the specific heal at T., which Basic. is shown tosatisfy strikingly well.
