When an impurity is placed between chains in quasi-one-dimensional solids, it cancause transfer of electrons between chains through itself. The effects of this impurityinduced interchain coupling on polarons are studied by means of the continuum ver-sion of the Holstein model. It is found that when the coupling strength exceeds acertain critical value, the polaron wave function extends itself over plural chainssurrounding the impurity, rather than being localized on a single chain. Higherconductivity in directions perpendicular to the chains than in the parallel direction ob-served quite recently in doped halogen-bridged mixed-valence platinum complexeslends support to the above-mentioned picture.
