Reflection and Photoemission Studies of Neutron-Irradiated Graphite

• Neutron-irradiated graphites were studied by reflectivity and jchotoemission (UPS,ARUPS, XPS) measurements. The m-band reflectivity peak of graphite, located at 5eV, changed significantly and a small absorption band ascribed to vacancies producedby neutron bombardment was found to grow arc>und 3 eV. Modification of thevalence band by neutron irradiation was studied by ARUPS. The r-valence bandshifts to lower binding energy towards the Fermi level and its band width becomessmaller. These results were also confirmed by the optical joint density of states ob-tained from K-K analysis of the reflectivity.graphite, neutron irradiation, reflectivity, photoemission
