Optical Spectra of Y_2O_3 Single Crystals in the Vacuum Ultraviolet Region. II

The reflectivity spectrum of Y.0, single crystals at 297 K has been toe;xsured from6 eV to 1 10 eV, and optical functions are derived by the Kramers-Kronig transforma-Lion. The plasma loss peaks are fouuad at 14.2. eV and 38.40 eV. The spectrum ofe.(E ) is tentatively interpreted in terms of the energy levels of Y", Y" and O'- freeions. The spectral dependence of e. sugg<:sts tlaat interband transitions will be ex-hausted in the neighbourhood of 50 eV. In the energy region of f>50 eN/ occurs thespectrum due to the free electron-like absc>rption alone. The accuracy oj' the data isdiscussed by the effective optical dielectric constant. Tlae spectral dependence of thefree electron-like absorption is compared with that predicted by the Drude formula.The origin of the loss peak at 38.40 eV is discussed.
