The defensive secretion of Japanese Chrysomelinae larvae (Col. Chrysomeldiae) was investigated. Willow-feeding Chrysomela vigintipunctata costella (MARSEUL) secreted salicylaldehyde and benzaldehyde. In the secretion of poplar-feeding C. populi L., only salicylaldehyde was found. Gastrolina depressa BALY which feed on walunt emitted juglone (5-hydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone). The secretion of these 3 species showed repellency against ants (Lasius niger L.).
