• Marangoni instability of a circular column of viscous liquid is studied theoretically, which is caused by radial heat transfer due to uniform heat source as in a case where liquid changes to crystal (solid body) or vice versa. The interface tension gradient along the axis of the column may arise with varicose (axisymmetric) interface deformation which then causes the capillary instability. For the two instability mechanisms, the boundary of the stability (the onset of steady convections) and unsteady convections are shown of a water column as a typical example.
