A stability problem on the onset of Marangoni convection due to thermocapillary instability is studied theoretically for two viscous fluids on the inside and outside of a circular pipe, the annular interface between which may then give rise to capillary instability. The coupling of thermocapillary and capillary instabilities is analyzed for the quasi-steady convection of one annular fluid on a solid boundary. It is shown that the growth rate changes depending upon the radial gradient of temperature. For the capillary instability of two viscous fluids, effects of solid boundaries on the stability are examined for the critical state and unsteady state of the growing mode.
