For Marangoni instability due to heat transfer in a liquid layer bounded below by a solid layer and above by a gas phase, it was shown from a linear analysis that the critical Marangoni number is given by 48 in the limit of long wavelength. In this case, the method of long wave approximation is applied to analyze a nonlinear problem of Marangoni convection, so that an evolution equation governing the pattern of convection cells is derived, with taking into account the disturbance in a solid layer. Based upon its simplified form, a clue of numerical analysis to the equation is also discussed for some convection cells.
