In a linear stability analysis of Marangoni convection of a liquid layer which occurs due to transient mass transfer from the above gas phase, it has been shown for three-dimensional small disturbances that the critical Marangoni number for steady convection is given by 80 in the limit of zero wavenumber. It has also been shown that the disturbances of long wavelength around the critical state are governed by a nonlinear evolution equation. The equation is analyzed here to examine various planforms of Marangoni convection, such as roll, square and hexagonal cells. It is found that the subcritical instability may arise for the hexagonal cell pattern.
