The onset of thermocapillary convection due to the Marangoni instability is studied theoretically for an annular cylindrical liquid inside and outside viscous fluids, whose annular coaxial interface displacements may then cause capillary instability. The coupling mechanisms of thermocapillary and capillary instabilities are analyzed for the quasi-steady convection of the annular fluid of high viscosity. It is shown that the stretching and squeezing modes may arse as well in the capillary instability of an annular cylinder. It is also shown that the product of two Marangoni numbers is expressed as a function of the growth rate, the wavenumber and the parameters involved ; the growth rate increases with the Marangoni number. It is found that the result for the annular fluid is reduced to that for a plane sheet as the ratio of radii goes to unity.
