Marangoni instability of a liquid layer is studied theoretically which occurs due to transient mass transfer from the above gas phase. When the interface is flat, it is shown for three-dimensional small disturbances that the critical Marangoni number for steady convection is given by 80 in the limit of zero wavenumber. It is then shown that effects of interface deformation arise at disturbances of long wavelength.
