The thermocapillary instability (the onset of Marangoni convection) is studied theoretically for two-phase fluid layer in between solid plates, which is caused by the gradient of the interfacial tension coefficient due to the variation of liquid temperature along the interface between the fluids. A numerical analysis of the solvability condition for the linear system of equations is made on unsteady convections, and it is shown for small disturbances that some types of instability may arise depending upon the parameters involved, one of which is due to the interface deformation of long wavelength. The neutral state for the disturbances (steady convection) is shown for comparison.
