A contactless conveyance of steel plates is looked for in the rolling process, so as to maintain the quality of steel plate surafce. Therefore, we have proposed a method of magnetic levitation control of a thin steel plate with free edges so far. The plate is supported in contactless manner by attractive forces of five electromagnetic actuators which are controled by feedback signals five gap sensors to stabilize the levitation behavior. When designing an optimal controller taking five elastic modes equal to the number of the sensors into consideration, the system may get into spillover instability owing to the effects of higher order order residual modes. In order to suppress the spillover of residual modes, the sub-optimal control theory is applied to this magnetic levitation control system. In this paper, the effects of spillover of elastic vibration modes were examined by numerical simulations. As a result, it was confirmed that control method was very effective in levitating the thin steel plate and it was observed that the spillover of residual vibration modes were restrained by applying this method.
