We examined growth in female mice reared in light-dark cycles of 20 hours (20H) and 24 hours (24H). The growth curves drawn on calendar days showed that mice in the 20H group were heavier than ones in the 24H group up to 240 days of age, while both groups were similar in growth curves when their body weights were plotted against the number of light-dark cycles to which the mice were exposed. Growth analysis indicated that the specific growth rate per calendar day of the 20H group was greater than that of the 24H group only at the growth phase which corresponded to 30 to 80 or 90 days of age, but the specific growth rate for a light -dark cycle during that phase was nearly equal for the two groups. This may indicate that light acts as an entraining agent rather than as a photoperiodic inducer in the 20H LD cycle.
