Age-Associated Changes in the Open Field Behavior of Male Mice of the ICR/SLC Strain

Several measures of the open field behavior were assessed in male mice of the ICR/SLC strain from one to 24 months of age. A significant decrement in ambulation and rearing was observed with advancing age, while no significant correlation was found between age and grooming or defecation. Ambulation and rearing scores also exhibited an obvious decrease with repeated testing, whereas those of grooming showed a tendency to increase with repeated trials. Discussions explain discrepancies between the present results and previous ones. It is concluded that locomotion and exploratory behavior decrease with increasing age and with repeated testing in the male mouse.
