Levitation Control of a Steel Plate with Free Edges Supported by Electromagnets

A method of magnetic levitation control of a steel plate with free edges is presented. The plate is supported in contactless manner by attractive forces of electromagnetic actuators which are controlled by feedback signals from gap sensors to stabilize the levitation behavior. The optimal control theory is applied in this study. To verify usefulness of this method, an experiment applying the optimal digital control theory was perfomed for a steel plate with free edges (length : 800mm, width : 600mm, thickness : 0.3mm). As a result, it is confirmed that this control method is very effective in levitating the plate.
