Elastic Constants of Co/Pt Superlattice Studied by Acoustic Measurements and Ab initio Calculations

The anisotropic elastic constants of Co/Pt superlattice thin films were measured by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and picosecond laser ultrasound. The experimental results were compared with the ab initio calculations for perfect superlattices. The calculated out-of-plane elastic constant $C_{33}$ is consistent with the measured value within 4%. However, the measured in-plane elastic constant $C_{11}$ is smaller than the calculated value by 15–20%.
