Elastic Properties of Pd-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses Studied by Ultrasouond Spectroscopy

We investigated elastic constants $C_{ij}$ of Pd78Cu6Si16 and Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20 bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) by a MHz-frequency-range electromagnetic-acoustic-resonance technique from ambient temperature to 5 K. $C_{ij}(T)$ behaviors are well expressed by Varshni’s formula and estimated Einstein temperatures show the marked softening of acoustic phonons in these systems. The BMGs show a significantly low shear to longitudinal modulus ratio $C_{44}/C_{11}$, or an equivalently high Poisson’s ratio $\nu$, compared with constitutive crystalline elements. These unusual acoustic properties of the BMGs originate from their glassy microstructure and the $C_{44}/C_{11}$ ratio might be a useful parameter for characterizing the phase stability of BMGs.
