Scanning Atom Probe Study of Dissociation of Organic Molecules on Titanium Oxide

Utilizing the unique capability of a scanning atom probe (SAP), the dissociation of crystal violet, C25H30N3, and tetra-$n$-butylammonium hydroxide, N(C4H9)4OH, was investigated. A thin layer of crystal violet on a tungsten substrate was mass analyzed by irradiating a pulsed YAG laser beam. Although undissociated molecules were detected, most molecules dissociated into characteristic fragments. All molecules dissociated when the layer of crystal violet was formed on a layer of titanium oxide, possibly due to the photocatalytic effect of the oxide. The detection of the fragments suggests that double bonds of the molecules are stable. No isolated benzene nucleus, nitrogen atom nor alkyl, such as CH3 and C2H5, were detected. Although most tetra-$n$-butylammonium molecules remained undissociated, many fragments were hardly identifiable because the masses of the fragments were quite different from the multiple masses of carbon atoms.
