High-Pressure Raman Study of Liquid and Molecular Crystal Ethane Up to 8 GPa

The Raman scattering of liquid and crystalline ethane has been measured at pressures up to 8 GPa in a diamond anvil cell equipped for loading of condensable gases. Characteristic spectral features of intramolecular modes at 300 K indicate that the pressure-induced liquid$\rightarrow$solid II phase transition of ethane occurs at $P{=}2.5$ GPa. This result is supported by good agreement with the extrapolation (to 300 K) of the Simon-Glatzel equation previously determined at low temperatures.
