Acoustic Velocity Measurements for Various Directions of Solid n-D_2 at 136 kbar and 300 K by Billouin Scattering in a Diamond Anvil Cell

This paper presents a method of carrying out Brillouin scattering measurements using a diamond anvil cell. 45°, 60°, 90°, 120°, 135°, and 180° scattering geometries are used in order to determine the angular dependence of acoustical properties, and for each geometry the sound velocity (v) and the wave vector direction of the acoustic phonon are theoretically derived as a function of the refractive index (n) of the medium. It was found that, for normal scatterings at 60° and 90° and backward scattering at 120°, v can be determined simply by measuring the frequency shift independent of n. By applying this method to the study of solid n-D_2 at 136 kbar and 300 K in a diamond cell, we have found that the sound velocities are independent of angle on the plane parallel to the diamond interfaces.
