In base-catalyzed oxidation of a pair of associating thiols [HSCH<SUB>2</SUB>–CONHCONH–R<SUP>1</SUP> and HSCH<SUB>2</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>–NHCONHCO–R<SUP>2</SUP>] (R<SUP>1</SUP>=<I>n</I>-C<SUB>4</SUB>H<SUB>9</SUB>, R<SUP>2</SUP>=<I>n</I>-C<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>H<SUB>2<I>n</I>+1</SUB>) with oxygen, the selectivity (a measure of molecular recognition) at 35.0°C reached a maximum for R<SUP>1</SUP>=R<SUP>2</SUP> (=<I>n</I>-C<SUB>4</SUB>H<SUB>9</SUB>) both in aqueous acetonitrile (<I>n</I>=2 to 6) and in aqueous ethanol (<I>n</I>=3 to 5).
