A highly stereoselective reduction of substituted cyclohexanones using triisobutylaluminum-amine complexes.

The stereochemistry of the reduction of substituted cyclohexanones with a triisobutylaluminum(TIBA)–amine complex has been investigated, and the origin of the stereoselectivity has been discussed. Although a reduction of 4-<I>t</I>-butylcyclohexanone with free TIBA at 60 °C gave 83% <I>trans</I> alcohol, with a high stereoselectivity, 91–98% <I>trans</I> alcohol was obtained in this study. In order to discuss the reactivity of the reagent, the mode of the complexing of an amine to TIBA was investigated by infrared and NMR spectroscopy.
