A preliminary report of an epidemiological survey of vestibular neuronitis was made using a simple questionaire.Postcards were distributed to 56 medical facilities (otoneurologic clinics of university hospitals and outstanding district hospitals) through out Japan, and returned from 33 facilities (58.9%).The total number of patients who were examined otoneurologically is 25, 512, in the 3 years period from January 1975 to December 1977 at these 33 medical facilities.The total number of patients who were diagnosed as having vestibular neuronitis is 412 (1.6% on the average: 1.2% in 1975, 1.5% in 1976, and 2.1% in 1977). They were composed of 220 on the males and 192 in females, or 53.4% and 46.6%, respectively.The affected side was on the right in 207 (50.2%), the left in 180 (43.7%) and bilateral in 25 (6.1%).Preliminary survey of seasonal difference suggested some periodicity in the occurrence of disease every 4 months, although this has not yet been completely clarified.Further epidemiologcal survey of vestibular neuronitis is greatly needed under a well-designed and sufficiently controlled scheme involving facilities through out Japan.
