The concentrations of the muscle-related proteins (β-enolase, S-100 a0 and creatine kinase of M and B type) were measured in the rat masticatory (masseter, temporalis, digastric) and tongue muscles and compared with those in the ext ensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus (SOL) muscle. Which proteins can be a useful marker of the muscles in the oral region was explored. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The CKB concentration in the tongue muscles was markedly high compared to theother muscles. The β-enolase concentration was as low as in the SOL, a slow muscle. 2. The concentrations of the proteins in masseter, temporalis, digastric muscles were quite similar. The CKNI concentration was comparable to the EDL, a fast muscle. The S-100 a0 concentration was lowest among the muscles studied. The concentration of β-enolase was intermediate between SOL and EDL muscles. The CKB concentration was comparable tothat of the EDL muscles. It is concluded that the CKB and, 3-enolase are good markers for the tongue, while the CKNI and S-100 a0 for the masticatory muscles.
