We measured tumor volumes of HCC by CT using planimeter and evaluated the clinical value of this measurement by comparing several tumor markers. Tumor volumes measured by CT roughly agreed with those by angiography. But in some cases, volumes from ultrasonography were smaller than those from CT and angiography. Tumor volumes measured by CT correlated significantly with the levels of α-fetoprotein (AFP) but didn't relate to the presence of hepatoma specific γ-GTP isoenzyme (novel γ-GTP) nor to the values and positivities of LAI assay. In small HCCs (≤30cm3), the presence of novel γ-GTP and the levels of AFP were significantly lower than for larger tumors of HCC, but LAI assay wasn't lgwer. The non-tumorous volumes and the ratio of the non-tumorous volume to the whole liver volume didn't relate to the tests of liver functions except for the presence of ascites.
