Eighty-one (37 mild, 42 moderate, 2 severe) cases with ulcerative colitis (UC) were analyzed retrospectively in terms of laboratory findings of severity-indices at the time of their discharge in remission. Anemia, defined as below 13 grams Hb/dl for males and 12 for females, showed the highest frequency (41%) of aboormal findings on discharge. Hypoprotenemia was second (24%), and hyper-α2-globulinemia was third (18%). Increased ESR, hypoalbuminemia, positive CRP and leukocytosis showed very low incideces (4%). One or more of these abnormalities was found in 65 percent of the moderate cases and in 35 percent of the mild cases. Most of these turned out to be normal during the follow-up period. High Hb concentrations and low α2-globulin fractions on discharge were seen in patients who were in remission more than two years thereafter. Anemia was found equally in males and females. More than half of the cases with anemia showed iron deficiency, and iron was effective in the treatment of anemia. In conclusion, all laboratory examinations of severity-indices should be normal for the optimal condition in UC. Therefore, the complete disappearance of abnormal findings should be aimed at in the treatment of UC.
