Ultrasonographic examination for diagnosis of colo-rectal cancer.

Thirty-five patients with cob-rectal cancer, diagnosed by conventional methods, were examined ultrasonography (US) to evaluate its value in diagnosing colo-rectal cancer. Water enema was given to the patient before US. Most cases of colorectal cancer were visualized by US (34/35). One non-visualized tumor was located in the rectum. In twenty-one cases (65 %), diagnosis of an invasion of cancer and a range of infiltration by US corresponded well with the postoperative findings. Six cases diagnosed as hepatic metastasis by US were all confirmed on operations. The metastasis to the local lymph nodes was diagnosed correctly in five (29 %) out of eighteen cases. <BR>These results showed that US examination with water enema is useful for investigating cob-rectal cancer, particularly in evaluating the depth of cancer invasion, hepatic metastasis and the metastasis to the local lymph nodes.
