II. Ano-Rectal Manometry with an Infused Open-Tip Method:The First Report, the Standard Values of Normal Cases

The quantitative ano-rectal manometric study with an infused open-tip method was applied on 31 normal children, 40 cases with idiopathic chronic constipation and 21 cases with Hirschsprung's disease. The manometric standard values of normal anorectum was obtained by recording the rectoanal pressure profile.<BR>The resting pressure of the rectum was independent of child's age. The mean value was 9.94±3.05 cmH2O. The maximum resting anal canal pressure tended to increase with child's age. The mean values of each age group were, 83.2±38.2 cmH2O in neonates (Stage I), 84.7±33.3 cmH2O in infants younger than a year old (Stage II), 96.7±31.8 cmH2O in children aged one to six years old (Stage III), and 11.6±24.8 cmH2O in children elder than six years old (Stage IV). The length of the High Pressure Zone (HPZ) of the anal canal also increased with child's age, They. were, 1.4±0.4 cm in Stage I, 2.0±0.4cm in Stage II, 2.4±0.6 cm in Stage III and 2.5±0.7 cm in Stage IV. The area of the HPZ also increased with child's age. They were, 62.1±37.6 cm2HO in Stage I, 79.6±20.8 cmH2O in Stage II, 102.6±44.0 cm2H2O in Stage III and 145.9±44.2cm2H2O in Stage IV. The rhythmical activities of the anal canal were examined. These activities were proved to be different in a frequency between the upper and lower anal canal. In the upper anal canal, the mean value of the frequency was 13.5±3.9 cycle per minutes.<BR>The above-mentioned results could give a new basis for a quantitative manometric evaluation on the anorectum.
