Recent Advances in Extraction and Separation of Rare Earth Metals Using Ionic Liquids

In the present review article, we summarize recent advances in extraction and separation of rare earth metals using ionic liquids. Rare earth metals have unique electronic and magnetic properties. In Japan the amount of rare earth metals used in cutting-edge industry is increasing year by year. Therefore, a stable supply of rare earth metals is an important issue for our country. Recent research on extraction of rare earth metals using ionic liquids has made rapid progress because the extraction ability and/or selectivity for rare earth metals were found to be enhanced by using hydrophobic ionic liquids, which are applicable to liquid-liquid extraction operations. In the octyl (phenyl)-N,N-diisobutyl carbamoyl methylphosphine oxide (CMPO) extraction system using ionic liquids, the extraction ability was enhanced more than 103 times compared with that using n-dodecane; however, the stripping operation was difficult. Initial research into extraction using ionic liquids employed industrial extractants such as CMPO or PC-88A, but there is an as yet unsolved problem with the solubility of these extractants and their metal complexes. To overcome this problem, a new extractant, dioctyldiglycol amic acid (DODGAA), which is highly soluble in ionic liquids, has been developed. DODGAA shows better performance at separating zinc and rare earth metals in ionic liquids than in n-dodecane. Furthermore, a liquid membrane system using ionic liquids has been constructed for the separation and recovery of rare earth metals. The liquid membrane operation should reduce the amount of ionic liquids used in the metal recovery system.
