Field desorption mass spectrometry was applied to a series of underivatized anthracycline, cosmomycins. The mass spectra of the various compounds contain either molecular weight or sugar sequence information. Different fragmentation patterns are obtained from normal and linked field scanning. The mass spectrometric data make it clear that field desorption mass spectrometry become a valuable additional technique for structural analysis of anthracyclines.
