The effect of oxygen tension on L-valine fermentation was investigated using a valine-producing mutant of Brevibacterium lactofermentum, a glutamate producer. The product formation was maximal when the rate of oxygen supply was limited so that cell respiration was slightly inhibited to give a value of r_<ab>/KrM (rate of cell respiration/rate of cell's oxygen demand) 0.5-0.7. The E level (thr redox potential of the medium, mV) was between -260 and -200 mV in this culture, suggesting that E is a useful index to oxygen tension during the fermentation. This observation corresponds to the characteristics of the biosynthesis, where a precursor of L-valine, α-ketoisovalerate, is anaerobically produced.
