Introduction to Recent Activities in IEEE 802.22 Standardization

In this paper we present the recent update on IEEE 802.22 working group activities, especially smart grid and critical infrastructure monitoring (RASGCIM) study group activities and its successor IEEE 802.22b task group activities. The IEEE standard 802.22-2011 has recently been completed in last July 2011. As an action to extend and enhance 802.22 applications, use cases, system design a new study group named RASGCIM has been formed and approved by the IEEE 802 executive committee in the same month. The objective of the study group includes feasibility study of new amendment option of IEEE 802.22-2011 to include low complexity monitoring applications, as well as enhance the currently available broadband services. In the span of the study group during July 2011 to Dec 2011, many topics have been studied: distinct features of the proposed 802.22 amendment, new use cases, system requirements, development of the project authorization request and five criteria documents for proposed 802.22b project. In this paper, we briefly introduce the above-mentioned technical topics, as well as future direction on system design, system classes such as introduction of low complexity devices, possible access methods, throughput improvement options etc. In addition to introduction to the RASGCIM study group activities, we also introduce recent White Space Alliance (WSA) activities that is working to promote 802.22 deployment.
