On the performance of power allocation over downlink MIMO-OFDMA systems : theoretical analysis over multiple scenarios

In this paper, we present some interesting results on the performance of power allocation over downlink and uplink multi-user multiple input and multiple output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (MIMO-OFDMA) systems. Two radio resource management (RRM) schemes, namely, Maximizing system throughput without fairness and Optimizing system throughput as well as fairness among users, are proposed and compared under the equi-power allocation and power allocation with 2-dimension water filling algorithm in different wireless scenarios. Simulation results in the WiMAX systems show that the validity of power allocation significantly depends on the RRM scheme: By performing 2-dimension waterfilling algorithm along frequency and time domain, the system throughput has almost no improvement for the RRA scheme which maximizs system throughput without fairness, while for the RRA scheme which optimizes system throughput as well as fairness, the system throughput improves up to 1.5 times.
