A resource allocation algorithm for WLAN and WRAN system coexistence in TVWS

This paper proposes a resource allocation mechanism for WLAN and WRAN system that coexist in TV white spaces (TVWS). Regulations on UHF and VHF bands in countries such as U.S and Canada have been relaxed to improve the usage efficiency of the spectrum. Some of TV band spectrum are opened for communication systems, IEEE 802.22 WRAN and IEEE 802.11af WLAN for example. However, without coexistence mechanism, these systems may content for the spectrum, preventing the efficient usage of the bands. Existing coexistence algorithms coordinate the systems in a way that different channels are allocated for different systems so that each system will not suffer from interference generated by the others. These methods are straightforward however lack of efficiency and flexibility due to the rough resolution of the spectrum. This paper proposes a resource allocation mechanism based OFDMA. WLAN and WRAN systems operate on the same channel but utilize different sub channels in order to fully exploit the spectrum. Computer simulations demonstrate the dramatic improvement of throughput of both WLAN and WRAN systems with the proposed mechanism adopted.
