Effects of Various Growth Inhibitors on the Callus Growth and Flavonoid Production of Scutellaria baicalensis Callus Cultures

Effects of various growth inhibitors on the liavonoid production in stem callus cultures (Scbst-20) of Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI were studied. A marked increase in flavonoids, particularly baicalin, was observed in the cultures incubated in the dark when either 10^<-6> M Simazine or 10^<-5> M p-fluorophenylalanine (PFP) was added. With the addition of these compounds, the baicalin level (9.8 mg per tube containing 10 ml medium) of callus tissues after incubation for 40 days in the dark was comparable to that of Scutellaria Radix.
