Mild thermolysis of 2-(2-alkynylsulfinyl)tropones afforded 3-acylcyclohepta[b]-thiophen-8-ones and their dihydro derivatives. The cross-over experiment between 2-(2-propynylsulfinyl)tropone-3,5,7-d_3 and 2-(2-butynyisulfinyl)tropone confirmed the intramolecular nature of the reaction, being different from the mechanism observed in the similar thermolysis of 2-(2-propenylsulfinyl)tropones.
