Chickens were treated with testosterone-propionate on the 19th day of egg incubation or on the day of hatching, and were immunized at the ages of 3 and 4 weeks with a mixture of sheep red blood cells, Brucella abortus and Salmonella pullorum. The immunocompetence of chickens treated in embryonic life was rigidly restricted to IgM anti-sheep red blood cell antibody production. On the other hand, neonatally treated chickens had the capacity to produce IgM and IgG antibodies sheep red blood cells and Brucella abortus and IgM antibodies against Salmonella pullorum, and exhibited markedly stimulated production of plaque-forming cells specific for sheep red blood cells. The chickens neonatally treated had a much diminished number of splenic lymphocytes, especially bursa-derived lymphocytes. Such diverse influences of the testosterone-propionate-treatment on the humoral immune system were discussed from viewpoints of the B cell heterogeneity and of the difference in the period of maturation of various B cell clones.
