Splenomegaly and the increase in number of splenic lymphoid cells occurred as few as 6 hours after intravenous injection of sheep red blood cells into chickens. The splenomegaly was elicited by the injection irrespective of chicken ages, doses of sheep red blood cells and neonatal deprivation of the bursa of Fabricius or the thymus. The injection caused the augmentation of both B and T lymphocytes. The induction of the splenomegaly and the increase in number of splenic lymphoid cells were not prevented by the addition of inhibitors of cell division. On the other hand, the injection was accompanied with the significant decrease in number of circulating lymphoid cells. It was suggested strongly in the light of findings hitherto reported that the phenomena observed in the present experiments may be attributable to 'lymphocyte trapping' from the circulation by the spleen.
